Parsley Tea: Women’s Relief
A great ingredient is one that can adapt to many dishes, transcending its original intended purpose in order to bring zest to plate after plate. One such ingredient is the parsley leaf. Parsley leaf is a great herb that is grown all over the world for its culinary purposes. However, as a tea, parsley also has many additional benefits and uses as well. Parsley leaf tea can prove especially useful for women as an effective way of promoting healthy menstruation. This can be very beneficial for women who deal with issues like irregular or painful periods, as well as menstrual cramping.
Causes of Irregularities
As all women know, the menstrual cycle reaches its end once every month in a weeklong process called the period. During this process, the inner lining of the uterus is shed to make room for new tissue. During the breakdown, molecular compounds known as prostaglandins are released, causing the muscles of the uterus to contract. These contractions block oxygen to the old tissue and the process of expelling the tissue from the body is the cause of menstrual cramping. While most cramps are only mildly uncomfortable, some women will experience intense, even debilitating pain.
Menstrual irregularities in women are most often caused by a lack of hormonal balance. Other causes include a change in diet, substantial amounts of weight loss or gain, stress, disorders, travel, illness, or certain medicines that can have an effect on the hormones in the body. Occasional irregularities are normal, and are not a cause for concern. However, they can be an inconvenience and result in discomfort for many women. In cases of menstrual turbulence, herbal remedies such as parsley leaf tea may offer some relief.
How Parsley Tea Helps
Parsley leaf tea is effective in treating women who deal with menstrual irregularities through its role as an emmenagogue. The volatile oils in parsley leaf tea can induce the occurrence of a period in women. These oils stimulate the blood flow in the uterus and help to soothe the cervix, which can help it to dilate and encourage the onset of a period.
To use parsley tea for supporting a period, drink 3 to 4 cups on the day that menstruation is scheduled for. To improve the flavor of this tea, lemon or honey can also be added as well if preferred. If taking any prescribed medications, be sure to speak with your doctor or primary healthcare provider before drinking parsley leaf tea.
